The Race You Can Never Win

The dog represents the speed of your brain.

The guy represents the speed of your talking.

This occurs naturally, even when you’re sitting at home on your couch. Can you imagine what this is like with your brain all tripped up on adrenaline?

So what do you do with this knowledge?

Since your speaking is going to feel slow as mud compared to your thinking, you have to accept it. There is no way your tongue can keep up with your thoughts – but you can slow your thoughts down.

The next thing to understand is that the audience needs to hear you speak slower so that they can listen to what you are saying.

The last comment is that what feels like putting on the brakes to you, is relief for the audience. Pause! During your pause the audience has the opportunity to process all that you’ve said.

The key here is awareness. Relax your thinking pace. Make sure you aren’t trying to talk as fast as your thinking. Pause.

The best part of all of this? Deeper connection with your audience.
